As recent research published in Acta Otorrinolaringologica Española reveals, Spanish-speaking individuals suffering from postlingual deafness show promising clinical safety and auditory outcomes following surgery with the innovative Nurotron™ cochlear implant. Conducted by esteemed researchers from Clínica Universitaria Unisanitas and Universidad Militar Nueva Granada, the study analyzes the efficacy of the cochlear implant in improving the lives of those affected by significant hearing loss.

The study, which retrospectively evaluates a series of cases, is authored by prominent figures in the field of otolaryngology, including Leonardo Elías Ordóñez Ordóñez, Esther Sofía Angulo Martínez, Silvia Carolina Vanegas, and Silvia Raquel Rodríguez Montoya. Focused on patients whose primary language is Spanish and who lost their hearing post-language acquisition, the research sheds light on both the complications and auditory advancements observed after cochlear implantation.
Enhanced Speech Perception and Reduced Tinnitus
This comprehensive research included 31 participants, with the majority being male (54.8%). The mean age at the time of surgery was approximately 50 years, and the follow-up period ranged from just over 19 months to a little over 4 years. All the patients suffered from bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss or unilateral deafness with or without accompanying tinnitus.
The audiological assessments performed pre- and post-surgery included pure tone thresholds and speech performance checks using bilingual tests. The results were encouraging. In particular, the mean score for language discrimination in free field conditions at 65 dB SPL, was 62.19% after cochlear implantation, an uptick that was especially significant among patients with severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, who scored an average of 69.82%.
Furthermore, a dramatic decrease in the severity of tinnitus was recorded. Using the visual analogue scale, patients showed a reduction from a rating of 7.2 preoperatively to 1.7 eighteen months postoperation, highlighting the Nurotron™ cochlear implant’s ability to provide relief from this distressing condition.
Concerning Complications Remain Low
Considering clinical safety, the Nurotron™ cochlear implant illustrates a reassuring profile. Only one patient (3.23%) experienced a significant complication, a hardware failure that necessitated the implant’s removal and subsequent re-implantation. Minor complications were present in 25.8% of cases, with vertigo/unsteadiness being the most common, affecting 22.6% of the cohort.
Although the incidence of major complications was relatively low, the authors advise continued observation due to the hardware failure rate being higher than seen in other comparable studies.
The Promise of Cochlear Implants
Cochlear implants have long been celebrated as transformative devices for individuals with profound hearing loss.
